Monday, May 19, 2003, moss hosted the US launch of Campanas, a book published by Brazillian publisher Bookmark, celebrating the work of Brazil's most celebrated designers, Fernando and Humberto Campana.
This is the cover of the book, without its resin dustjacket.
The exhibit accompanying the book launch consisted of the new chair designed by the brothers called Favela, which is made of Brazilian pinus wood and is produced by Edra.
The Favela Chair
Favelas on display.
The first favela began on a hill in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1800s, built by African-Brazilian veterans who had nowhere else to go. They named their settlement favela after a tree that grew on the hillsides there. The word became associated with all such settlements. The "Favela" chair is constructed piece-by-piece from the same wood used to build the favelas, and every piece is hand-glued and nailed.
